Exam prep: Microsoft Exam 70-448 (070-448): Microsoft SQL Server 2008, Business Intelligence Development and Maintenance

Next up: BI.

The good news:  There are decent textbooks and possibly even a serviceable .VCE.

The bad news: There’s a TON of material to know for this exam.  Multiple complex topics are touched on, including data mining/modeling.

Getting started:  If you haven’t read it, I strongly recommend Ralph Kimball’s The Data Warehouse Toolkit.

This is a great book – probably the best - for understanding the fundamentals of dimensional modeling.  There’s heavy detail in here as well.  I suggest reading the entire book, but the following will suffice for exam preparation:

Chapters 1 - 4 (Entirely)

Chapter 5 (Dimensional outriggers, Large Changing customer dimensions, minidimensions)

Chapter 16 from “Physical design” onward.

Chapters 6 -15 are largely advanced examples of the concepts outlined earlier – great reading, but beyond the scope of the 070-448 exam.

Second, the actual exam text – and it’s a good one after a slew of mediocrity.

This one should be read in its entirety.  The forthcoming guide will be divided into 3 sections – SSIS, SSAS, and SSRS.  I suggest focusing on one at a time.
